What Is The Difference To Cos-players?

What Is The Difference To Cos-players?

We actually get this question a lot. From new members to the community as well as from interviewers of the media, news reporters, documentaries....

What is the difference?

This question is often asked because (While not a requirement)  it is not unheard of for Jediists to wear Jedi robes, train with toy lightsabers, and adopt fictional references into their doctrines and beliefs. You will find these practices at Jedi Gatherings for Knighting Ceremonies or Weddings. Within certain offline Chapter Groups for group representation and or advertisement, or even the individual member who found deeper meanings to wearing the robe for practices like meditations and ceremonies or personal comfort. (after all, they really are quite comfortable to wear!)

Due to the incoherent nature within the Jedi Community concerning the use of jedi attire. Outside viewers who are unaware of our practice question and wonder when they see photos of Jediists wearing Jedi Robes and waving around lightsabers like your average cosplayer, what is the difference? Both play dress up.

A couple things we like to remind people

Jediist’s are very self conscious when it comes to legitimizing their practice. The Jedi path is a serious commitment that the members work hard to learn and apply into their lives.
It is a spiritual and to some religious testament to the kind of people that they really are.

Vs

Cosplayers who dress up merely to enjoy conventions or entertain people for fun and/or charitable purposes but take it no further than that. At the end of the day they hang up their costumes and think no more past hair style and matching boots.

It is important to remember that

A: Jediist’s are normal, everyday people, like you. Some do enjoy conventions and having a good, fun and sometimes silly time. Some do not at all...and some work hard to stamp it out of the Jediism/Realism practice entirely. No matter which category a Jediist fall’s under, they are much much more than just the costume.

B: Jediist’s support and encourage its members to dress up and bring smiles to children in hospitals as “Service” is a Key Stone of importance to Jediists.  They simply choose to  take it a step further than dressing up.

Journal Entry:

  • Would you wear robes and/or toy saber hilts to represent your faith in Jediism? Why or why not?
